I ended up throwing this script away and going for a fully-fledged Rails app, so you can browse and filter achievements - http://achievements.movieos... - so I'm not terribly interested in this script any more. But it shouldn't be too hard to fix this script, the XML changes look minor.

Re: guildachievements - jerakeen.org

This is just what I have been looking for for my guild. My proposed solution is to write an SMTP server and mail store with a web interface to the mail, and a nice modern API on top. SMTP and RFC822 are worth keeping but I think IMAP is probably holding us back at this point.

Re: yay more email clients - jerakeen.org

So in other words, your proposed solution is "don't work with any server"?

You have to start somewhere. IMAP is the least sucky open, documented protocol, and also happens to be the most widely used. It's becoming increasingly clear that we can't do all the things that we'd like to, but you have to start somewhere. And even if we're held back by reality in general and IMAP in particular from doing an application that works the way you'd expect, we can do an IMAP client that behaves as a better email application than most others out there -- at least according to, you know, us.

Re: Shelf - Context for MacOS

The diet literature explains calories burned while jogging, playing tennis or golfing, but similar information concerning sexual activity has, until now, been unavailable.

Yet, a survey of 206,000,000 people indicated that 96% devote more time and effort to sex than jogging, tennis, or golf, and we felt that the time was right for a new type of sex manual.

EXAMPLES:

1 hr. intensive foreplay Burns Off:
1 slice (large) chocolate cake.

25 min. nonstop lovemaking Burns Off:
2 slices of pizza with cheese & I do have the same application apparently needing updating every single time (they seem to go away after a few days/weeks though), sometimes in iTunes, sometimes on the phone, sometimes both...

I've seen elsewhere it mentioned that iTunes may have a bug (or some previous version may have had it) where it'd store multiple versions of some of your apps. For example, Wikipedia.ipa, Wikipedia 1.ipa, Wikipedia 2.ipa. Strangely, it seems like iTunes at some point had instead of replacing the application, just made a new name for the latest version by adding a number to the end of the filename.

So it might be worth checking your Mobile Applications directory (just right click an app and click Show in Finder to get there most easily) to see if this has happened — it *might* have something to do with your issue... (alas, had nothing to do with mine)

Not 100% sure what the fix for that will be (in my case I tried deleting all apps from iTunes and all files from the Mobile Applications directory, then getting them transferred back from the iPhone — that might solve your issue by refreshing the iTunes app DB but unfortunately didn't fix my problem)...

Re: Shelf

Just checking in again. So one could say they learned their lesson and are just trying to give the best experience (OK music library which people are likely to be using already, no extra software needed to sync music) to everybody with the smallest effort for themselves. Sounds like a good idea to me.

The additional thing one is probably not allowed to mention in the presence of Mac whores is that Apple are complete asses who are keen to keep iTunes as incompatible as possible. That's certainly not for the benefit of the user.

Re: Server-side JavaScript under Apache

I love it when programmers get together and do crazy stuff. But the important point about the comments is that I don't really consider them to be 'my content'. They're the butter and jam spread on the bread - makes it better, lots of people like it, but still just a demo.

Also, I wouldn't mind too much if they all vanished, due to Disqus exploding or something. Which is unlikely, but I'm planning for the possibility of flickr/delicious exploding, so I might as well consider the possibility.

Re: EmusicR

Thank you so much for this. So you are reliant on third parties for those. I assume (due to previous remarks) this is because you're not interested in making commenting systems. Or to beat the metaphor when it's down, you're only interested in making ovens and baking trays, not microwaves and sandwich toasters.

Re: Running your own blog - jerakeen.org

I don't think I'm reliant on them. I use external services, sure, but one of the reasons for syndicating them the way I do (rather than say, Paul's shallow aggregation) is so that I have for the most part local copies of all the data I put into external services. If delicious explodes next week, for instance, I won't care too much. I have a local copy of all my bookmarks right here.

Re: Running your own blog - jerakeen.org

Interesting point. I do like the way your site seems to aggregate things. From what I have seen API-wise on the second web, my guess was that it requires a fair bit of effort and quite likely frustration to make it work, possibly together with a bit of discipline when posting things. I suppose there's a reason why you don't see such solutions more frequently.

While I ultimately think this is going the wrong way as you still seem quite dependent on many dubious internet services and a 'good world' should let you hook those sites up to yours rather than the other way round, it's perhaps the best we can do at the moment (or ever, as my inner pessimist suggests).
